The best liquids, additives and bait boosters

The best liquids, additives and bait boosters

Adding flavourings and colourings to baits has gone on for decades and is still one of the most debated topics in angling, with many questioning their effectiveness and whether these "boosters" catch more fish or just more anglers. One thing that does seem to be agreed up on, however, is that adding flavour to a bait doesn't seem to decrease catch rates and as better angling is generally confidence based, if you think it makes you catch more fish, that's enough evidence for you.

Liquids and additives come in almost every flavour and colour imaginable, from Banoffee to Krill and everything in between. It is unlikely a fish would come across a banana in the wild in the UK but this doesn't seem to put them off eating baits flavoured with it, helping cement the flavour as a firm favourite with carp and match anglers alike. It is generally considered that more fish based flavours are better for carp, with sweeter flavours more favoured by species like bream and tench.

Whatever your opinion, flavours are here to stay and with manufacturers increasing their ranges, it is obvious anglers are buying them. Could it soon be detrimental to your angling to not use them? This guide looks at some of the best liquids and additives currently available...

Best liquid for flavouring pellets

Mainline Match Sticky Syrup is a collection of PVA-friendly, highly attractive additives, in six flavours to complement the Mainline groundbait range. Highly active in water, the viscous liquid creates a huge cloud to disperse along the bottom and a highly attractive plume to the surface. Supplied in 250ml ‘flip and pour’ capped bottles. They can be added to pellets to allow them to soak in the flavour and colour, squirted on top of a method for an extra boost of attraction or used on boilies, it's a very versatile liquid indeed.

Pros

 • Very versatile liquid.
 • Sticky nature helps bind pellets for fishing on a feeder.

Cons

 • You can get through the bottle quite quickly.

Best bait spray

The Dynamite Baits Wowzer Spray is a great addition to any anglers side tray, the compact 30ml bottle and very handy spray top means they take up minimal room in your bag and can easily be applied to whatever you want before casting out.

Coming in a range of flavours there are plenty to choose from but our favourites are the ES-L and ES-F1, they smell divine and certainly seem to get us more bites. A couple of sprays onto a loaded method feeder or even on some bread for dobbing can make all the difference, especially when bites are hard to come by.

Pros

 • Handy spray top bottle.
 • Concentrated flavours.

Cons

 • The bottle can be hard to spray if you have really cold hands.

Best liquid for adding to a method feeder

Sonubaits Haze is a viscous additive that produces a plume of cloud around your chosen bait. Being denser than water means Lava will remain around your baited area for long periods instead of drifting off. Simply smear on directly to hook or feeder baits, into your spod or onto your feeder, where its tacky nature ensures it remains in place during the cast. It can be put into water before soaking your pellets to allow them to fully absorb the flavour for extra attraction.

Pros

 • Viscous liquid, sinks to the bottom to create a halo of attraction.
 • Huge range of flavours.

Cons

 • The option of a larger bottle would be nice.

Best liquid for binding groundbait

These Dynamite Baits DB1 Liquid Binders serve two purposes, as well as flavouring your groundbait, it helps to bind it together too. Ideal for deep swims, balling in at range or fast-flowing rivers, these pour-in liquids instantly add binding power to your existing groundbait mix. They are also great if you are blasting a method feeder to the horizon and want to ensure your groundbait stays in tact when the feeder hits the water. It allows you to have a much wider choice of groundbaits, with many that would normally be unsuitable for certain situations now available to use, increasing your versatility on the bank.

Also worth having in your bag if you fish rivers often, as it will help you tailor your mix depending on how much water the river is carrying, so you're never left without bait to use. There are three flavours in the range: Silver Fish with coriander oil, Bream with sweet caramel, and River, with a meaty cheesy flavour that barbel and chub love.

Pros

 • Instantly helps bind groundbait mixes.
 • Helps increase the versatility of your mixes.

Cons

 • More flavours in the range would be better.

Best bait booster for soaking hookbaits

Probably the most infamous bait additive of modern times. Korda Kiana Goo, is a soak, glug and spod mix additive all rolled into one, and available in nearing 40 colour and flavour combinations. Power Smokes are incredibly powerful and can transform sessions after just a few spods or additions to your PVA bag. Bait Smokes are softer in colour and natural smelling, so they cannot be overdone.

Their applications are never ending, you can add them to hookbaits over long periods, apply to a feeder before casting out, use to cloud the water in a spod mix or add to the water before mixing your groundbait. The most popular versions seem to be the Squid, Almond, Isotonic and Pineapple, but they all work and the majority smell fantastic. The likes of Steve Ringer and Tom Dove being great advocates of its use, if it's good enough for them, it is surely good enough for the rest of us.

Pros

 • Incredible range of flavours and colours available.
 • Numerous applications make it really versatile.

Cons

 • The brighter colours will stain your hands for a while.

Best liquids for a variety of species and tactics

Some of the original flavours of the Dynamite Baits XL Liquid Additives, like the Predator Liquid and Liquid Worm will have been used at some point by most people in their angling lives, with the former's, distinct deep red colour being used to colour meat hookbaits when it was popular to do so. These liquids have been firm favourites of many anglers and all of them are solid, proven fish catching flavours. The handy bottle cap top allows you to apply exactly how much you want making them very user friendly.

As well as colouring baits, they are particularly good at flavouring baits when added to the water prior to soaking or mixing, ensuring they are infused into the bait, enhancing them with a wonderful aroma. The Dynamite XL range also benefits from the addition of liquid betaine, to further enhance the appeal and help stimulate fish to feed.

 • Colourings help change the appearance of bait, great edge for fishery pellets.

Best liquids for carp fishing

Sticky Baits Pure Liquids
Price: $8.99-12.99

www.ebay.co.uk

The Sticky Baits Pure Liquids range are incredible quality and are exactly what they say, blended fish or liver hydrolysates, meaning all the natural goodness, attraction and oils are contained in a user friendly liquid. When you lift the lid, depending on your disposition, you will either be repulsed or enjoy the smell, but one thing is for sure, it screams fish attraction.

The range has expanded recently with the addition of Sardine and Squid Hydros, but the firm favourites of many anglers such as the Shrimp, Liquid Liver and Calanus Liquids are still in the range. As the name suggests these liquids are entirely natural and rely on triggering the carp's natural senses of locating amino acids to attract them to the area. They can be added to water to mix into groundbaits, cover pellets and boilies, and due to their high salt levels, they can help preserve baits prone to going bad for a while too.

Pros

 • All natural, super attractive liquids.
 • Very appealing to all coarse fish.

Cons

 • They do stink.

Best liquid for versatility

Unlike anything else on the market, the innovative Mainline Smart Liquid has an endless use of applications whatever your favoured angling discipline. A very thick, viscous liquid, it can be used to coat baits, added to pellets and groundbaits or to dip your feeder or hookbaits into, it really is that versatile. It is also 100% PVA friendly, so it can be used inside solid bags or added to mesh bags.

This liquid might look the same as many others but once it's introduced to water, it is totally unique. It disperses in so may different ways, some of the liquid lingers and clouds the lakebed, whilst other items in the liquid rise and shoot off in different directions, helping to pull fish down to feed. This ensures that all the columns of water are saturated with attraction, helping to draw fish into your swim and keep them feeding for prolonged periods, increasing your chances of a bite. It is ideal for using for any coarse fish in any situation, from carp fishing to barbel fishing, this liquid will help you catch more fish.

Pros

 • Incredible, unique dispersion in water.
 • Endless applications.

Cons

 • It does solidify in very cold conditions, making it tricky to get out of the bottle.

Best liquid for colouring bait

Developed by Phil and Steve Ringer, these Ringers Liquids have had input from some of the best anglers of their generation. The bright red and yellow dyes in the range being the most recognisable and widely used are based on a shellfish attractant, which is highly attractive yet subtle enough to prevent it being too powerful, allowing it to be used effectively all year. Suppllied in a 250ml pot, the liquid goes a long way, so use sparingly.

The liquids are particularly popular for dying baits like meat and pellets, with the yellow seeming to be very attractive to fish like skimmers and carp, especially when the temperatures begin to drop. The colours are very potent, so won't simply wash off like some others do. Once your bait is dyed, it will take some getting off, as you will find out if it gets on your hands. They are great additives to use when fishery pellets have to be used, as they can offer the fish something different in terms of colour and flavour to help give you an edge.

Pros

 • Very strong colours, perfect for dying baits.
 • Great for fishery pellets.

Cons

 • The range is limited to one flavour.

Best liquid for fishery pellets

This is a powerful game-changing liquid that creates new colour and flavour options for pellets, meat and paste hookbaits and feeds. Ideally applied directly on to a bait, the super sweet Choco Mocha flavour is super-attractive for carp and F1s, especially when it’s added to micro pellets.

Also in this range of liquids is Power Prawn (Red), Scopex Supreme (Yellow) and Betaine Twist (Green with a sweet citrus flavour).

Pros

 • Very deep colour profile.
 • Strong smelling liquids.

Cons

 • Not widely available.

What to look for in a liquid or additive

As we can't talk to the fish, we will never truly know how much of a difference a flavour or colour makes to our fishing, but if they give you confidence, they are worth every drop. When it comes to choosing a flavour, it all depends on how you want to apply it and what species you'll be fishing for. There is no point choosing a liquid to coat PVA in if it is not PVA friendly, for example.

If you are looking to fish for silverfish, particularly bream, then we would advise you opt for a sweet flavouring, as they do seem to show preference to a sweeter option. Carp and barbel, on the other hand, tend to be far more stimulated by natural, fish based flavours. If you are looking to change the colour of your baits, look for a liquid that has a deep colour but is also thinner in viscosity, as this will help the liquid penetrate the bait and make sure it doesn't just wash off when it enters the water.

If you are relying on a quick bite, then it pays to flavour your hookbait only, to make it the most attractive item in your swim. Alternatively, if you are looking to draw as many fish into your peg as possible, then adding the flavour to the water you use to mix your groundbait or pellets with can be far more useful. The general rule is, the thicker liquids are best for coating baits and feeders or being mixed into bait, while the thinner liquids are best for flavouring hookbaits over a longer period of time or adding to mixes to create a cloud in the water.

Frequently asked questions on liquids

What is the best liquid to use for fishing?

Unfortunately, there is no single best liquid for fishing. With so many factors to consider, every liquid has a place on its day and it's about picking the liquid that best suits what you want it to do. If you want to soak a pop-up or a hookbait, choose a very powerful, thin liquid, that will soak into the bait over time, this will allow it to leak attraction for prolonged periods. If you want instant attraction or colour, then a thicker liquid, either applied directly or diluted in water before adding to your bait, would be far better.

Are flavourings necessary in angling?

In short, no they aren't, as fish have happily eaten bait without any extra additives for years and they will continue to do so. However, on pressured waters or under match conditions, anything that can give you an extra edge is always worth trying. It is amazing how some venues respond to certain flavours and colours, where they are the kiss of death on other waters. It is basically a confidence boost, if using a liquid makes you more confident, you will fish better and catch more as a result. Whether that is down to the flavour or you will always remain a mystery until the fish tell us otherwise.

Are there and particular colours that are better than others?

There does appear to be a trend with certain colours, with yellow, pink and red a particular favourite of many anglers. Bream and carp do seem to be attracted to yellow hookbaits, especially as the water cools, and don't forget two of the most successful fishing baits of all time are sweetcorn and red maggots. It is definitely worth experimenting to find out what colours or flavours work best on your venues.
