Bread is a versatile and effective bait for a variety of fish species, especially when other baits lose their appeal. Its bright colour and soft texture make it highly visible and easy for fish to consume. It is cheaply accessible and very versatile, the bait can be manipulated to float, sink slowly or quickly thanks to its texture and in this guide we will discuss the different ways to utilise bread to catch you more fish.

Bread Flake

Using a piece of breadflake is a simple and effective way to use bread that can be fished on a float or a feeder. When used in this manner the bait can be manipulated to float, sink slowly or quickly thanks to its texture. Any brand of white bread can be used but Warburtons Toastie loaf is favoured by anglers because of its soft doughy texture, which helps it stay on the hook.

Floating Bread

Floating bread is a great way to catch fish, especially carp and chub, but equally as effective for most species. It is one of the most simplistic ways to fish, freelining a big piece of bread or crust on the surface of still waters or in the flow on rivers. There aren't many things as exciting as seeing a fish approach your hookbait, the sight of a take can leave your heart in your mouth.

Punched bread

Punched bread is an effective bait on both commercials and natural venues, a small, punched disc of 4mm-8mm is as good a bait for roach on canals as it is carp on snake lakes. Fished up to cover or features in the upper layers of water on commercials in the cooler months a technique called dobbing, can be highly effective for carp and f1’s. Conversely a small piece of punched bread fished in clear water on a canal or river can catch even the wariest of fish, particularly effective for roach fed in conjunction with breadcrumbs.
