Catch your first carp on float
Float fishing is one of the best methods for beginners, especially at short range or in the margins, on commercial fisheries. The optimal time to target carp using a float is later in the day, when the water light levels start to drop, encouraging fish to start feeding. As the day progresses, carp often move into shallower waters where they’ve become conditioned to anglers tossing in unused bait.
To set up your float rod, use a small, loaded float (with a pre-loaded weight at the base) secured with float stops. A typical shotting pattern is three No. 8 droppers, but you may need to adjust the number of shots depending on the size of your float. Choose hookbaits like a bunch of maggots, sweetcorn, or a hair-rigged pellet are great options. Feed pellets or groundbait to mimic the unused bait carp are accustomed to seeing towards the end of the day.
It's important to plumb up accurately, presenting a bait an inch over depth is best as this will prevent line bites. Only strike when the float moves quickly, which usually means the carp has sucked in the hookbait.

Catch your first carp on the method feeder
The method feeder is another fantastic method for beginners. It’s a simple, highly effective technique that requires minimal equipment but yields impressive results. The method feeder allows you to target carp in various parts of your swim, making it one of the best ways to catch your first carp.
To use the method feeder, set up your feeder rod and thread the feeder onto your mainline and tie on a quick-change bead. Attach a 3-4” hooklength with a hair rig and use a wafter or pellet hookbait.
Next, mould your chosen groundbait or pellets around the feeder, ensuring the hookbait is either buried inside the mix or left exposed. Play around with the mix ratio and experiment with whether the hookbait is better buried or left out. The more you test, the better you'll understand what works best.
You can cast the method feeder towards various features, such as islands, reedbeds, or into the margins. The beauty of the method feeder is its versatility, it’s effective no matter where you choose to cast it.
