Feeding with a catapult is a brilliant way of keeping your swim fed, it allows you to accurately feed bait around your float, and over your feeder or lead to keep fish feeding in your peg A catapult can effectively propel a variety of different baits from maggots and casters to boilies and balls of groundbait.
There are different types of catapults on the market each suited to feeding different types of baits and feeding them over different distances.
Particularly useful for creating noise whilst feeding with harder baits like pellets on commercials on the pole or the pellet waggler, or spreading particle over larger areas upstream on the river or out over your spots when carp fishing.
This article will explain exactly how to use a catapult effectively and give a few hints and tips on how to increase your accuracy when using one.
Keep the frame square
One of the most important things to consider when using a catapult is that the frame remains square to the pouch once the elastic is stretched. This ensures that when you release the catapult pouch it travels in a straight line and doesn’t collide with the frame as this will cause the contents of the pouch to scatter unpredictably or end up around your feet.

Push the frame forward
Rather than pulling the pouch and elastic back from the frame, push the frame forward away from the pouch. As the frame is lighter in weight and you have a solid grip on the handle, it is far easier to keep everything in a straight line, as when pulling the elastic back from the frame there is a tendency to pull back towards your body that can take it offline and affect spread and accuracy.

Don’t overfill the pouch
If you want to be accurate don’t overload the pouch as this can cause much wider spread of the bait, particularly with softer baits like maggots or baits that aren’t particularly aerodynamic like sweetcorn.

Modify your catapult
To achieve accuracy with distance, modifying the length of elastic used with the catapult can set a maximum distance. This can be particularly handy when feeding groundbait on a float or a number of boilies to a marker float at a set distance. By reducing the elastic to a point, you know its maximum capability can enhance the accuracy greatly.

Practice makes perfect
Feeding with a catapult is a skill and the more you practice the more accurate and efficient you will become, allowing you to confidently feed your swim at different distances with pinpoint accuracy.
