The most important thing to remember when fishing commercials during the cooler months is that the amount of loosefeed needs to be reduced.

For rod and line anglers, that often means relying on a Method feeder or single hookbait approach, but there’s a great alternative that’s often shunned – and that’s using small PVA bags of pellets. It provides a single mouthful for a big carp and, crucially, presents the food in a way that isn’t seen too often by them.

Following a summer in which the fish have been heavily pressured, a different type of presentation could make the difference between a personal best carp settling down to feed or spooking out of the swim!

Supercharge your bags

The water may be a little clearer than it was a couple of months ago, but carp are still hunting by scent, and glugging your PVA bag in a liquid will help them find it quickly. The flavours and aromas of the liquid attractant (which must be PVA-friendly) create a powerful scent trail which can trigger previously inactive carp into feeding.

Tie identical bags

Making sure that every PVA bag is the same size has several benefits. It ensures that you are feeding the same quantity on each cast, so you can moderate what is going in, and aids casting, as you are chucking out the same weight each time. Use a small pole pot to measure out the pellets for each bag to guarantee you achieve this goal.

Create a contrast

A big carp will only eat one or two mouthfuls and, if the pile of stick mix has dispersed, you want to stack the odds in your favour that the hookbait will be the first thing they see. Something like a bright 8mm Mainline Match wafter will give you that edge, and rotating between yellow, pink and orange versions can help to keep the bites coming.

Be patient

Minimising disturbance in your target zone is key to success with any tactic. Casting every 15-20 minutes will do this when working with a straight lead and PVA bag. There’s no point winding in every five minutes and disturbing a perfectly presented pile, and you should only do so if you sense that area is flagging and you want to cast elsewhere.
