The drop shot rig is a versatile and easy-to-use technique for predominantly targeting perch, although any predatory fish can be caught using this super-effective method. The rig is simple to tie, can be used on the majority of venues in the uk and requires you to carry minimal kit, ideal for beginners or those short on time.

One of the key advantages of the drop shot rig is its adjustable depth. The interchangeable weight allows you to quickly adjust the depth of your lure, ensuring you're always fishing close to the bottom.

A slow, hesitant retrieve with pauses and twitches is ideal for cold water conditions when perch are hugging the bottom. This technique allows you to thoroughly cover the water at different speeds, increasing your chances of success as you can almost tease the fish into taking the lure.

For optimal results, use a light braid of around 10lb. Braid offers improved bite detection and sensitivity, allowing you to feel every pebble and strand of weed on the bottom. Experiment with soft lures ranging from 3cm to 9cm to find the most effective option for your target perch.
