You'll hear many anglers at this time of year say the carp ‘are starting to wake up’. Technically, carp don’t really sleep, but they go into a somewhat dormant state in winter. But, as days get longer and warmer, they certainly become more active as they start to search out food again and explore areas of the lake they haven’t visited for months on end.

It’s important not to go in with all guns blazing, as we are only just out of winter and the water will still be cold. These following tips should hopefully ensure you strike the right balance and stack the odds in your favour, resulting in plenty of spring carp in the net…

Get your tactics right and you'll have loads of carp in your album this spring!

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail

First and foremost, before you even get to the lake, it always pays to prepare your kit for the season ahead. Re-spool your reels, get plenty of rigs tied and prepare any particles. Anything that helps you to hit the ground running for your very first session will stand you in good stead.

You can't take it out

Go steady with your baiting as the water still isn’t warm enough for huge beds of bait. It’s better to build up a swim gradually. On a well-stocked lake, 8-10 Spombs is plenty to start with, followed by two or three after each fish.

Minimal Ingredients

Using a simple bait mix is far better than overcomplicating things. There aren’t many carp that could resist a mix of crushed boilies mixed with corn and a bit of hemp. At this time of year there’s really no need to go overboard with wild bait recipes – stick to what you know will work on your waters of choice.

Trust in your rigs

Whatever presentation you decide to use, the key things to ensure are that it is tangle-free and works effectively. Always incorporate anti-tangle sleeves, use hooklinks with an element of stiffness, or even small PVA bags. Anything that gives you confidence that your rig is fishing effectively 100 per cent of the time is a big edge.

Accuracy is king

Accurate baiting is of paramount importance, there’s no point fishing at 100 yards if the bait is spread over a 30-yard square. It’s better to knock a few yards off your casts and land the Spomb within the area of a standard bivvy groundsheet every cast, rather than put all your effort into fishing as far out as you can!

Check the weather

Mild weather fronts, with low pressure, occur frequently in the spring, and can lead to super-prolific sport. If you can plan your trips around these weather patterns, using long-range forecasts, you’ll increase your chances by a considerable margin!

Get on the solids

Solid bags are perfect for spring. They have very little food content, and don’t overfeed the fish, plus you can cast them around various spots to help you pinpoint exactly where the fish are. Use a bag mix containing tiny pellets, along with a small pop-up and wafter, and you won’t go far wrong.

Use bright hookbaits

Bright hookbaits can be really effective in spring. Never leave home without several different options – pink, white and yellow are all proven winners. Some bait companies even produce tubs containing multiple colour options, which can help to keep your costs down.

Don't ignore the upper layers

In early spring the sun, and its strength, plays a huge part in the whereabouts of the carp and, more often than not– unless you havea big wind and low pressure – they will be swimming off the bottom. It is vital to remember your zig fishing kit, because if the fish don’t want to visit the lakebed, you could be left sitting there twiddling your thumbs and scratching your head, waiting for a bite forever.

Stay on your toes

Fish are highly nomadic in spring and can move spots in the blink of an eye. It pays to keep focused and be prepared to move with the fish, to ensure you keep catching throughout your session. We can’t always stumble on a honey hole – sometimes you have to work for your bites.
