Fishing holidays: Where to stay and fish on the River Severn

A favourite and local hotspot for Angling Times columnist Des Taylor, the Severn is not only the longest river in Great Britain, but a firm favourite with anglers too. Most visit for the superb barbel sport that can be had on the right day, but in the winter don’t rule out the river’s potential for massive predators too, with huge perch, zander and pike all possible. Here’s some great places to stay if you're visiting the area…

The Severn is well known for its barbel stocks.

Barbel Lodge, Bridgnorth

Located overlooking the River Severn, the Barbel Lodge is a 1940s, 3-bedroom lodge built with the angler in mind. The self-catering lodge is a 5-minute stroll from the Highley station where you can travel by steam train to local Bridgnorth and Bewdley. Fishing is included in the stay and is located outside the lodge. All coarse species are present but as the name suggests the stretch is most famed for its barbel, although not growing to huge sizes, they are very plentiful in the 5-7lb range, which can provide an excellent day’s sport.

Severn Valley View, Highley

Just minutes away from the famous stretches at Bewdley and Bridgnorth, this is a great place to stay if you’re looking to fish the River Severn. Catering to all angler's needs, it’s an ideal location for anglers that want to explore different stretches of the river during their stay. The fishing is via day ticket available from local clubs and tackle shops which provide exceptional fishing for the main target barbel and chub. Float fishing and feeder fishing both scoring well in this area.

River Steam Holidays, Shropshire

Nestled in the Severn Valley and offering a range of lodges and bespoke cottages with stunning river views, River Steam caters to families and solo anglers alike. Fishing is included with a quarter of a mile of river to choose from, accessible from all the properties. All properties are dog friendly and provide a lockable shed and bait fridge. Fishing is fairly classic of the Severn with feeder fished boilies and pellets scoring well for the numerous barbel and chub that inhabit the river.

River Steam Holidays

Unicorn Inn, Bridgnorth

The Unicorn Inn and campsite is a river angler’s dream. Located on the banks of the River Severn you couldn’t ask for a better location for barbel. Both holiday lets and camping are available to cater to all budgets and preferences and are a few minutes walk from the famous Hampton Loade stretch known as ‘Barbel Alley’. Whilst fishing isn’t included, tickets and tackle are easily obtainable from the nearby Middle Severn Angling, who are also able to give visiting anglers the most up to date information on the river.

Barbel Alley B&B, Hampton Loade

Barbel Alley B&B is situated within the hamlet of Hampton Loade. Conveniently located about 150 meters from some of the most superb barbel and chub fishing on the River Severn, with excellent day ticket stretches within walking distance. Coaching is also available on request if required and for the anglers that like to get an early start, sandwiches and flasks can be made available from 5.30am or delivered to the bank for you on the nearby stretches.

River Severn Hampton Loade

The Dinney Holiday Cottages, Chelmarsh

A little more extravagant and just a stone’s throw from the River Severn at Bridgnorth is The Dinney. Located on a family run farm, the cottages offer accommodation from two up to 20 to cater for all celebrations and events. Fishing isn’t included in the package, but the facilities are fantastic, and day tickets for fishing are easily obtainable from Birmingham Anglers Association. Barbel and chub again being the most prevalent species in this area, providing great fishing for visiting anglers.

Bank Cottage Holiday Home, The Rhydd

Bank Cottage is an idyllic holiday let located 20m from the mighty River Severn in peaceful surroundings. Fishing is included, comprising of 70m of easily accessible riverbank, with chub, barbel, roach and dace the main targets. In terms of location, you can’t get much closer to the river, perfect for anglers with mobility issues or families that like to socialise whilst fishing.

The Lenchford Inn, Worcester

Both ensuite rooms and camping are available at this establishment, allowing flexibility to those who wish to stay in more comfort or bring their own accommodation with them. The hotel owns the fishing rights to the River Severn which is located on site and is free to all guests staying at the hotel. The hotel also has a restaurant onsite providing both lunchtime and evening menus for guests. Larger barbel for the river are known to frequent this stretch. Definitely worth considering if you enjoy a bit more luxury.
