River Foss, York, N.Yorks
This small river is a great bet for chub. Stealth and watercraft are essential. York and District AA controls the fishing, with membership just £47.

Chub to 5lb can be found in this free-to-fish stretch. Link-leger and freelining tactics are hard to beat, but be sure to stay back from the water’s edge.

You’ll find some cracking chub in this once-polluted stretch on the outskirts of Sheffield. Keep on the move, dropping into any likely spots. Free fishing.

River Welland, Stamford, S.Lincs
Wander the picturesque meadows with a rod, net and a bit of bread, and spend a day stalking chub. Target the deeper pools and hold on tight! It’s free fishing too.

At Billingford Lakes you’ll find a gorgeous stretch of the Wensum that can be fished on a day ticket. Keep it simple, using worms, meat and bread.

Below the weir on the Seven Meadows stretch is chub heaven. Fish casters on the stick float or waggler in the pacey water, feeding regularly.
