10,000 fish introduced to boost river stock levels

After receiving reports of declining chub catches on a Midlands river, the Environment Agency’s Calverton Fish Farm responded emphatically by stocking 10,000 of the species into the waterway.

Members of Loughborough Soar Angling Society spoke to the EA about a sharp drop-off in the number of chub being landed on its stretch of the River Soar in Leicestershire.

So, just before the season ended, the team from Calverton visited the river, and although the fish they introduced are only a few inches long, it’s hoped they will give the stretch a helping hand.

“We’ll probably stock again next year, and we have stocked some barbel into this stretch in previous years as well,” Calverton’s Dan Clark said.

“We will be staying in touch with the angling club and, hopefully, this will help with the problem of declining chub catches.”

NOW THE RIVERS ARE CLOSED, WHY NOT HEAD TO ONE OF THESE GREAT STILLWATERS?
