Most young anglers start by catching small fish, then work their way up to targeting specimen fish but 12-year-old Hugo Byers ignored that and went straight into catching huge fish like this 62lb catfish on a recent trip with his dad, Adam.

“We had just joined the syndicate water at Messingham Sands Fishery near Scunthorpe that day and rushed last minute for a quick overnight session,” Adam said.

"A few weeks prior, we fished on the day ticket lake and Hugo caught his previous PB cat of 23lbs, vowing that he would increase that when we returned!"

"Hugo chose to fish a long string of krill boilies over a bed of pellet where he had seen fish activity on our initial scope of the lake when turning up to the venue."

"Following an uneventful few hours, he was thinking of a recast when the alarm on the left-hand rod, let off a few slow bleeps" Adam added.

After waiting to see if the run developed, Hugo decided to strike and connected with a fish he initially thought wasn’t a monster, however after fighting the fish for over 20 minutes he realised he wrong.

"It was an epic fight, and as we bundled the fish in, the net buckled in two and the line gave way, so we were seconds away from losing it."

"Hugo was absolutely over the moon with the catch, and at 62.4lb, it was close to the believed biggest of the lake at around the 70lb mark. We will be returning to the lake to hopefully target the big carp next time," he said.
