A 15-year-old angler has smashed the venue record at Lake Carpathia with the capture of one of the biggest fish in the renowned Cotswold Water Park – a whopping 50lb 14oz mirror.

Liam Smith with his huge Cotswold mirror carp

Liam Smith was fishing with his dad Jason on the southern syndicate water when the huge fish known as ‘The Freak’ gave him a fight to remember.

“We didn’t have a bleep through the night, but at around 4:30am the rod just ripped into life” Liam told us.

“After an incredibly tough 20-minute battle, my dad slipped the net under what looked like a new PB, but we had no idea it was going to be a fifty!

“Everybody on the lake reeled in to come round to celebrate the moment with me – I couldn’t believe it.”

The 'Freak' is a new lake record at the Cotswold venue

It’s not the first big carp Liam has caught this year either, as proud dad Jason confirmed…

“Liam has been on fire on another lake this year, with four thirties up to 34lb in just this last month.”

Fishing on the end of a south westerly wind, Liam fished to a spot at 25-wraps range over a spodded area of Baitworks Royal Marine boilies soaked in Crustacean compound and S-Creamer powder. A matching wafter presented on a fluorocarbon D-rig was the winning tactic – superb angling!
