Freezing cold conditions hit sport on venues across the land at the weekend but the River Wye in Hereford once again defied the odds as no less than four anglers broke the 100lb barrier during the latest match.
A field of 72-anglers braved the sub-zero temperatures and a proportion of them were rewarded in breath-taking style, with Jason Bean needing 173lb 12oz of chub to win from peg 96.

He didn’t have it all his own way though, with Hadrian Whittle piling on the pressure from peg 81. He eventually fell just short, finishing the day with 148lb 5oz. Third place went to Kevin Ellaby who recorded 129lb from peg 95, with river fishing legend Dave Harrell taking fourth with 103lb 11oz.
The amazing weights only tell part of the story though, as plenty of others struggled as the shoals packed tightly to shelter from the wintery conditions. There were 30 dry nets recorded, with 11 of the 12 anglers in B section between pegs 26 to 45 blanking.
