An impromptu decision to wet a line after completing a job turned out to be a wise move for Nate Green as he ended a 20-year hunt for a 2lb-plus roach by design.

The Kent-based pest controller headed to a friend’s lake to conduct some work and once the task was dealt with, he decided to have a quick session in search of the venue’s redfins.

Having scoured the water and noticed a fish top in an area that a grebe was patrolling, he clipped up his rods to tackle the spot before baiting it with four Spombs full of maggots and groundbait.

Action was far from instant, but after two hours the shoal turned up, with fish in the 8oz-12oz bracket coming thick and fast.

His rhythm was suddenly halted when something much more substantial took the bait before firmly pulling back.

Nate’s initial instinct was that a perch was attached to the other end, but that theory was soon to put to bed, and he told Angling Times: “When I saw a flash of silver as it rolled I knew it was a big roach and my heart rate went through the roof. It took another 30 seconds to get it in the net and once I’d beaten it, I knew straight away I’d finally achieved my goal.

“It weighed 2lb 3oz and considering how much effort I have put in to making this happen over the last year, it’s crazy that it happened on a session that wasn’t even planned to happen!”
