A friendly competition bringing species hunters together has raised over £1,500 for the charity Tackling Minds.

Challenging entrants of all ages to tempt as many different fish as possible, the ‘Big Lerf’ event celebrates the art of light rock fishing (LRF), which is all about making weird and wonderful catches on tiny lures.

A superb 23 different species were recorded at the event in Plymouth, including dragonet, black bream and sea scorpion.

By close of play, the leader board was so tight that Will Pender and Lucas Theocharides, each tied on 12 species, had to engage in a sudden-death fish off, with the former edging a tense finish. “Everyone did us proud,” said organiser Ben Bassett, who added it had been the biggest event of its kind so far.
