25lb zander tempted by a very unusual bait

Whilst fishing for carp and catfish, Phil Evans landed the fish of a lifetime in the shape of this 25lb zander… on two 21mm halibut pellets!

The Norwich angler was fishing the River Ebro in Mequinenza, Spain, when he hooked the specimen weighing nearly 4lb over James Benfield’s current British Record.

Interestingly, that fish – a specimen of 21lb 5oz from the River Severn weighing 21lb 5oz landed back in 2007 - also fell to a halibut pellet hookbait!

“I was fishing on a bend where the Segre – a tributary of the Ebro – meets the main river, when I hooked a fish that I thought felt a bit funny,” Phil told us.

“It definitely wasn’t a carp or catfish, and felt more like a perch, with lots of head shaking. It fought well though, and my guides from CatMaster Tours say it’s not far off the Spanish record.”
