4-year-old catches carp too big to lift

Many anglers fondly remember their early fishing years, often spent catching fish on a local canal or river. Perch and roach were the usual suspects, while dreams of landing monsters from the depths fueled the passion to keep trying 'one last cast'.

Four-year-old Lewis Handyman-Richards landed one such monster—a 24lb 7oz common carp— while fishing with his mum, Hannah, and dad, Jason at Linbrook Carp Fishery in Hampshire. The fish was so big he struggled to lift it and had to get help from his mum.

“Lewis is absolutely obsessed with fishing, for such a young person to have such a passion for something is amazing,” Hannah told us.

“He prepped his bait, made his rig (with a little help!) and chose his hookbait. He was delighted with this catch – although he was unable to lift it on his own!

Even at such a young age, Luke had some excellent words of wisdom for his fellow anglers:

"Carp don’t like noise and it’s best to use bait you believe in. Try to be patient. Don’t leave them out of the water for too long. You should love the fish you have caught and look after them."

It is likely we will be seeing a lot more catch reports in the next few years from Luke, so watch this space!
