Gary Whalley’s decision to ignore the carp and target roach paid off handsomely during his latest visit to a commercial fishery as he used just £3 of bait to top the field with 45lb 3oz of them.
A field of 27 anglers turned out at Lancashire’s Whitmore Fisheries for the open event, with a rover format used to decide the pegging. Despite picking ball 27 out of the bag and having last pick, he still fancied his chances, with most rivals heading for Colosseum which is renowned for its big carp weights.
With the ice having just melted, Gary felt confident that his all-out silverfish attack from peg 15 on East Lake would work a treat and so it proved, as he sparingly fed casters at 10m to catch a 2-4oz roach almost every drop in.
His total weight gave him clear daylight on the nearest chaser. Second placed Stu Kennedy included a surprise specimen in his 35lb 8oz netful, with a double figure sturgeon going into the net on peg 14 on Basin Lake.
It isn’t the first time that Gary has won with silvers at Whitmore either, with the Wigan-based bagger winning the two previous matches at the venue with 22lb and 23lb.
