Depending on where you live, the species of fish in your area and their potential size can vary significantly. Many anglers travel the length and breadth of the country in search of their dream fish, but how far would you be willing to go, especially with no guarantee of success?
Andy Sowerby took that risk, and it paid off in tremendous style. After travelling over 500 miles, he landed what he described as a "fish of a lifetime" — a perch weighing 4lb 11oz, making all the effort worthwhile.
“I travelled from the North East down to the Thames near Abingdon, Oxford, where I boarded Kingfisher, skippered by Phil. Perch were my target."
“We made a long drift downstream and ran a floatfished bait through a few spots, but with no action. So we switched to a static float paternoster rig with a bleak hookbait."
“At 3.15pm I had a tentative pick-up, but the fish dropped the bait. Quickly recasting to the same spot, I then had a take on the drop."
“After a short fight, Phil expertly netted a perch that we both said was the biggest we had ever seen."
“It weighed 4lb 11oz, and was 48cm long. For me, it was the fish of a lifetime, and well worth a 500-mile round trip!”
