The recent run of mild weather clearly had a positive impact on the silverfish stocks at a top commercial, with the winner of the latest event weighing in over 50lb of roach.

North Yorkshire’s The Oaks has produced several bumper hauls this winter, but sport peaked during this week’s silvers open, with winner Karl Heptonstall placing an astonishing 50lb 14oz of redfins on to the scales.

Drawn on peg 5 of Willows Pool, the local expert fancied his chances and made the most of the hotspot by rotating two pole lines at 12m.

He was only one fish away from being ousted though, with Guru-backed star Rob Swan coming agonisingly close to spoiling the party.

Rotating between fishing on the deck and shallow with the long pole and maggots from peg 35 on Alders, he found the resident ide more than willing to oblige and finished the contest with 50lb 5oz.
