6lb 8oz brace of rudd taken on carp fishing tactics

Rudd are one of the most iconic coarse fish of the warmer months and catching them is often a simple case of a waggler float and bread.

For the really big specimens, however, often a little bit more thinking is required, which is exactly what Dave Robinson found when targeting them on a large gravel pit.

“My plan was to fish pop-up boilies on short, 3ins ‘micro-Ronnie rigs’, presented on a helicopter set-up to compensate for the lake’s stodgy bottom," Dave told us.

"I honestly don't think there's a more effective rig out there than a Ronnie, or ‘spinner’ as it’s sometimes known.

"I know it's not classic rudd tactics, but I went down that route for years, and figured it was now time to catch them, rather than just fish for them!"

His unusual tactics were certainly rewarded, as over three trips he banked plenty of bream, 20 tench, two carp and a dozen or so of his target rudd, including five 2lb-plus specimens, topped by a brace of 3lb 4oz giants.
