Angler catches a huge koi carp from his own lake

It is the dream of many anglers growing up to own their own lake or fishery as they get older, but unfortunately very few manage to make it a reality. Whether due to time constraints, financial commitments, or simply following a different path, life often gets in the way, but for those who do manage to acquire a fishery, the enjoyment and satisfaction they get from developing it makes all the effort worthwhile.

Shaun Bickford is one of those rare few. Since taking over Angel's Lakes near Shropshire six years ago, the venue has gone from strength to strength, with the carp growing bigger and more impressive each year.

There is one extraordinary fish that many anglers go to Angel's to catch and that is the giant koi carp, aptly named 'The Carrot', which in these unusual circumstances, Shaun caught after stocking and rearing it, in a fun circle moment!

What a stunning fish it is!

Speaking to Shaun, he explained how he has strived to improve the fishery since taking it on:

"Angels Lake is well known for its amazing stock of fish, with some now weighing over 40lb. These are old English Redmire-strain fish. When I started here, I didn’t have a single fish over 15lb."

"Now, 95% of the stock are high 20s, 30s, or 40s. The growth rates here are incredible, capitalising on the right management, feeding program, and pure love for the sport, the fish are thriving."

"The future of this complex and all the lakes on site is incredibly promising. I fully expect to see a 50lb fish in the coming years. The stock and individual fish here are truly special."

Finding himself with some free time, Shaun decided to fish a quick overnight session, heading to Angels Lake in hopes of landing a bite or two. After a quiet night, he was abruptly woken by his alarm.

"Before it got dark, I positioned a rig against the far margin where I had seen a few fish feeding."

"I used a Crab and Krill wafter, baiting with a few handfuls of our house boilies that the fish really love in here."

"At 6am, my bobbin hit the deck as the hooked fish swam toward me, away from the far bank. After a spirited fight, I saw the orange flank turn in the water, and I instantly knew it was 'The Carrot'."

"It's such a special fish, one I’ve reared it since it was 7lb, when it was first stocked into the lake. I’ve seen it put a smile on many other anglers’ faces, now it was my turn and it was great to see the fish over 30lb and in excellent condition. It makes all the long days worthwhile."
