Many of us are familiar with the anglerfish, thanks to its coverage in films like Finding Nemo and wildlife programs where its bioluminescent "lure" is used to attract prey in the extreme depths of the ocean. However, how many of us know that they can be caught on rod and line, let alone actually catch one?
One angler familiar with the species is Dave Barham, who caught this anglerfish weighing 21 lb 4 oz. While this is a rare catch with rod and line, it is actually his fourth anglerfish, making it even more remarkable. Fishing out of the Sandland Brygge camp, where the huge cod was landed earlier in the year, Dave boarded a charter in search of halibut and cod before the anglerfish surprised them.
"I’m fishing in Norway, I love it out here and get out as much as I can, the fishing is exceptional," he told us.
"We were fishing in around 90m of water as the boat drifted over the back of a large plateau on the seabed."
"The extra depth was obvious where the anglerfish was holding up as they are a deepwater species, it is the fourth one I have caught from Norway and they are always amazing to see."
"The trip was really successful, catching 11 halibut to 50lb, a load of plaice to 5lb 2oz, and a heap of cod to over 40lb in 5 days," he added.
