We all love fishing for its ability to surprise us when we least expect it. Depending on where you fish, you never really know what your next bite will be! This was certainly the case for David Betteley during his latest session when he managed to catch a terrapin.
David recently returned to fishing after a 20-year hiatus, purchasing a club ticket for a local lake he had always wanted to fish. On his first session back, David was fishing with maggots using simple float tactics, just trying to catch anything after being away from the sport for so long.
Unbelievably, his first bite after 20 years wasn't a fish but a terrapin. He wasn't even aware there were any in the lake and assumed someone had released their pet after they no longer wanted it.
“I made a return to fishing for the first time in nearly 20 years. I purchased a card for Kidsgrove Anglers because I’d always fancied fishing a venue called Bathpool Park.
"On my first visit, after a few missed bites, I finally hooked my first fish after so many years.
"The fight was very slow and ponderous, and when it hit the surface, I couldn’t believe my eyes—it was a terrapin."
Thankfully, he was using barbless hooks, so when the pressure was off, the hook dropped out. It was a strange return to fishing but certainly something memorable from the session.
