Angler lands chub of a lifetime on flooded river

Big chub captures have been few and far between since the season re-opened but with autumn rolling in, the bigger fish have begun to be caught. One such angler was Alfie Lane, who landed an enormous PB chub at a superb weight of 7lb 15oz.

Fishing on the famous chub river, the Dorset Stour, Alfie saw an opportunity to get on the bank as the recent floodwater began to recede, making the conditions favourable for a bite or two. It was certainly the correct decision as not long after getting settled into a swim, he landed the chub he described as a 'fish of a lifetime'.

"I arrived at my favorite stretch of the local Dorset Stour just as the water levels began to drop after recent floods," Alfie said.

"Sensing the fish would be feeding, I targeted a slack section of water by some overhanging trees, where I expected fish to be held up during daylight hours," he explained.

"As soon as I made my first cast, I received a strong indication that fish were in the swim. After missing the first bite, I repositioned the rod just before dusk."

"Tactic wise, I opted for a small PVA bag of mixed pellet and a small garlic boilie, with the water being coloured and high I just wanted to create a small, highly attractive trap to catch any feeding fish."

"Not long after, my centrepin went into meltdown, and I hooked into a very heavy fish that was holding out in the flow."

"As it neared the net, I saw the small fry scattering, which made me think I might have hooked something special," he recalled.

"After an epic battle, I was relieved when the fish finally slid into the net. Lifting the chub out of the water, I knew I had landed a fish of a lifetime."

"Weighing the fish, I couldn't believe my eyes when the needle settled at 7lb 15oz, a fish I have always dreamed about was now mine, what a feeling!"
