Cal Lacono went afloat last week on a Midlands river to test out some new electronics – but ended up having the fight of his life with this zander, measuring nearly 3ft long!

The lure fanatic spent some time scanning the stretch before settling into a likely looking spot.

“Just as the light was fading my 13cm shad was smashed by what turned out to be this 16lb killing machine,” he told us.

“With my reel clutch set tight, the fish towed my boat upstream, stripping line with the rod-tip hooped over, touching the water!”
