Angler’s first zander is a beast from the River Severn

While it is nice to catch fish on your own, sometimes—especially when fishing for a new species—we need a little help to ensure our tactics are right and, depending on what you are fishing for, you can choose to spend a day with an angling coach or opt for a guided trip. The beauty of this is that it condenses what could be years of learning a stretch or a certain method into just a few hours of fishing, saving you time and effort in an increasingly busy world.

Having never caught a zander before, nor having any idea where to start, Luke McLoughlin sought the help of experienced guides on the River Severn to help land his first one. Not only did he succeed, but he also landed this superb fish, proving that knowledge plays a huge role in catching big fish, no matter the venue or the species.

“The other day I tried fishing for zander on the Severn, with the guides at Severn Expeditions.

“The river was mucky, because of all the rain, so we decided to stay in the marina. The zander were about, and were biting all day, but they kept picking up the bait and dropping it."

“The key to success was to strike at the first bite and, on a lovely clear day, I managed this zander of 14lb 14oz!"

“The successful tactics on the day were presenting a roach deadbait fished beneath a pike float."

“We added one other small zander. I can’t recommend these guides strongly enough!”
