Anglers warned to be cautious of bird flu

Anglers are being warned not to approach or handle any sick birds they may see, following news that the avian flu epidemic is spreading across England.

Most cases have been found in the north and east of the country, but in recent weeks bird populations in the south and west have also been affected.

In Worcester, 50 swans died from the disease, and the virus has also now been found in the Avon valley, Hampshire, an area popular with the fishing fraternity.

To help stop the spread, anglers are encouraged to follow the ‘check, clean, dry’ guidelines whenever they leave the water, and to report any suspected cases.

A Defra spokesperson said: “Symptoms in birds include a swollen head, gaping beak, coughing, sneezing and gurgling. Report sightings of dead birds by calling the Defra helpline on 03459 33 55 77.”
