Angling Times specimen angler of the year Simon Ashton has landed a stunning 3lb 2oz grayling during a memorable fishing session, capping off a haul of over 40 fish.

Despite challenging condition, with low water levels and poor clarity, Simon was able to tempt the elusive fish using a scaled-down approach and a well-presented bait. Targeting deep pools and gullies, he employed a light stick float, and opted for double no4 shot spaced evenly, "shirt button" style through the rig with 3 no8 droppers to ensure a natural fall rather than using an olivette to bulk down the rig.

By carefully holding the rig back just before the rig entered the feeding area he was able to entice the grayling to bite.

The highlight of the session came in the late afternoon when Simon landed the memorable 'lady of the stream', a fish he described as a "true Scottish monster." The catch was made using a size 18 prototype hook baited with triple red maggots flavoured with Hinders Liquid Gold Betalin.

In addition to the specimen, Simon also landed several other grayling, including 12 over 2 pound.
