The wild waters of Scotland have built a legendary reputation for producing monster pike down the decades, and Raymond Gavin proved exactly why they have such a pedigree when he landed this remarkable fish weighing 34lb.
He’s been targeting pike since October and recently embarked on an early morning session with his friend, Adam. The pair were fishing by sunrise and, after a few small jacks for Adam early in the session, Raymond switched tactics to a floatfished roach before sitting back to take in the stunning scenery.
Soon, he received a knock on the float, before it slowly vanished beneath the surface. He duly lifted into a heavy resistance, which he says felt like ‘bringing a big log up from the bottom’, before he saw a big swirl on the surface as the fish dived and pulled line from the reel.
With Adam crouched at the water’s edge, ready with the net, the fish made a few last-minute bursts for freedom when it neared the bank. As Raymond prayed the hooks would hold firm, Adam managed to land the huge predator, which only just fitted into their large landing net!
The friends were shocked by the sheer size of the pike, and both admitted to still be shaking with adrenaline long after it was released and had swam away strongly.
IF YOU WANT TO LAND BIG PIKE LIKE THIS ONE, YOU NEED TO USE ONE OF THE BEST PIKE RODS!
