A 48 hour carp fishing session at Berners Hall Fishery The Res in Essex saw Jay Ashley land the venue’s biggest resident at a new lake record weight of 57lb.

The 24-year-old Basildon-based angler was coming towards the end of the trip when his left-hand rod fished at 12 wraps towards the far margin over a mix of micro pellets including DNA Baits Crayfish Mix, Sticky Bloodworm and Mainline Spod and PVA Mix, ripped off.

“It was a typical big-fish fight and just felt slow and heavy,” Jay told Angling Times.

“I eventually landed this absolute hippo of carp known as ‘Grumpy’. It smashed my previous PB of 28lb 5oz and was new lake record for Berners. I’m still shaking now!” he added.

The day-ticket giant fell to a Mainline Match 10mm wafter hookbait fished inside a solid PVA bag on a 6ins blowback rig incorporating a size 6 Korda Krank hook and a 25lb Korda Supernatural hooklink.
