Big perch gives thumping bite on crankbait lure

Persistence paid off on a trip to Grafham Water for Northants angler Jamie Cartwright, when he took this 4lb 14oz perch.

The former Drennan Cup winner had boated fish of 3lb 15oz and 3lb 11oz on jigs early in the day but was keen to catch one on a crankbait.

He stuck with the method, trying various speeds of retrieve, until he finally got some interest.

First, he had a hit on the lure from a good fish that came off in seconds.

A cast to the same area then resulted in a thumping bite, and this time, it stuck.

The perch fought well under the boat before finally rising from the depths.
