This fine roach weighing just under 3lb was taken by Andy Oxley’s from a reservoir in West Yorkshire, a region not noted for big redfins.

He’d only fished here a handful of times, and this time round Andy introduced a bed of hemp, stewed wheat and dead maggots, before casting a maggot feeder fished heli-style over the top.

He opted for a 16ins hooklink, rather than the usual short one many anglers choose. It’s a rig that has accounted for a range of species, and he makes sure to fish it over a clean lakebed.

After casting out and the feeder hits the deck, Andy then drags it back 10ins or so, to straighten out the hooklink.

His approach clearly worked on this session, as he landed a handful of other two-pounders, including a fish of 2lb 14oz and the superb 2lb 15oz 8dr specimen (pictured).
