“I DECIDED to do a month-long chub campaign on a tributary of the Yorkshire Ouse, fishing short sessions each evening just into dark.
“I felt the chances of a seven-pounder were realistic, and after approximately 27 biteless hours and some bitterly cold nights, I eventually found a small pod of fish that were willing to feed.
“Over three crazy sessions, I managed to catch five ‘sixes’ in a row, followed eventually by this 7lb 1oz cracker.
“For a chub angler, catches like this one are unreal, and they brought my tally this year from northern rivers to no fewer than 18 six-pounders and four ‘sevens’.
“All the fish fell to plain old bread, fished in a variety of forms, with a smearing of homemade milk protein paste on the hook. This stuff smells like a well-matured tramp’s sock, but it works!”
