Bread tempts chunky Lea seven-pounder

AFTER catching a remarkable run of big chub at the end of last season, Essex angler Paul Faint has picked up where he left off again this winter, landing this 7lb 9oz fish from the River Lea.

After blanking on an overnight chub session on the Thames, Paul decided to up sticks and drive over to the Lea, but rather than head to his usual haunts, opted instead to try a stretch he hadn’t fished before.

He settled into a swim where there was just enough room to fish one rod, and he had around 8ft of depth. He didn’t complicate matters tactics-wise, opting to use the classic chub combination of liquidised bread in a swimfeeder alongside a big lump of flake on a size 6 hook. On his third cast, the quivertip pulled round and he hooked a really hard-fighting fish that took him two attempts to land.

It’s the second seven-pounder Paul’s had in the last couple of months, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see him land a few bigger ones over the next few months judging by last season’s exploits!
