It is the dream of many river anglers to catch a big chub, and a giant over 7lb is a fish most specimen anglers would love to see lying on their mats. Landing one is a fish-of-a-lifetime achievement for most, which further highlights what an incredible season Callum Cornish has had—catching three chub over the 7lb mark, including a huge 7lb 12oz specimen from his local Bristol Avon.
Fishing in and around the Bath area, Callum has battled through difficult conditions this winter, enduring heavy rainfall and freezing temperatures to land the impressive fish. The Bristol Avon isn’t the first river that comes to mind when thinking of giant chub, but they are there and Callum has certainly found a way to locate and land the bigger fish in this stretch.

"The conditions this winter have been tough, but I’ve made it my mission to keep fishing in the hope of landing a fish or two," Callum said.
"As the fish are few and far between on this stretch, I find it best to adopt a roving approach. Generally, if you can locate a fish and present the bait correctly, you can nick a bite," he added.
"My favourite bait for this is small cubes of luncheon meat, with a few small shot pinched onto the line to let it trundle naturally along the bottom."
"I’ve found it much more effective to fish at dusk and into the night—it definitely seems to make the chub more confident. The banks are also much quieter, giving me more freedom to move and search," Callum explained.
"Most recently, I landed a scale-perfect 7lb 12oz chub just a few days after catching a 7lb 8oz fish from a different stretch."
"It has certainly been a season to remember, and hopefully, I can land a few more before it ends."
