They may be one of our most controversial species, but zander continue to soar in popularity with anglers, and with fish like this 18lb 14oz giant on offer – caught last week from the Gloucester Canal by Mark Dutfield – it’s easy to see why!

He used a four-inch Pro Shad lure to tempt the impressive predator, which is believed to be the largest zander ever taken from Britain’s extensive canal network. Mark, from Worcester, was keen to return the fish quickly after weighing, so took a quick photo before sending it on its way.

“To begin with it just felt like a dead weight, but then it woke up and I had to let it do its own thing, because I was using a relatively light tackle set-up,” Mark told us.

“I’m delighted with the catch, as I only really started targeting zander last year!”
