While being outdoors is a pleasure in itself and catching fish is often just a bonus for many anglers, it’s always special to have a red-letter session now and then—especially when it doesn’t require loads of expensive bait to make it happen.

Julian Warrington recently enjoyed the best bag of bream he has ever landed during a memorable outing to the Trent & Mersey Canal. Even more impressive is the fact that he used just 60p worth of bread to secure his superb haul of slabs in a session he says may never happen to him again.

“On a trip to the Trent & Mersey Canal the other day I had my personal best catch of bream, landing 38lb of them," he informed us.

“All were caught on bread punch, and I started by feeding a tangerine-sized ball at 11m at the base of the far slope."

“For the first hour, I fished 6mm punch and snared a few roach, skimmers, and two bream, before they backed off.

“I started a new line at 13m, and after netting two skimmers and feeding a bigger ball of liquidised feed, I stepped up to an 8mm punch, finishing the day with 15 bream to 4lb, all caught on half a loaf of bread!”
