Carp tactics leads to huge tench

Whilst there have been plenty of tench caught this year, reports of big fish have been limited. However, angler Aaron Ishy caught this cracking 11lb 3oz tench whilst out fishing during the recent warm spell.

He was fishing a syndicate lake near Manchester and was actually targeting the stock of large carp that reside in the venue, but it was the magnificent double-figure tench that made his session memorable.

"I had been baiting a raised area in the shallower end of the lake for a few weeks in the hope of getting some fish feeding before fishing, as the fish are tricky in here," he told us.

"The bait had been eaten and fish were visiting the spot, so I planned a trip as soon as I could."

"I dropped into the swim and deployed my favourite Ronnie rig setup, with a pink mulberry pop-up on the end."

It didn't take long for the prebaiting to pay off, as Aaron had a bite within minutes of deploying his rig onto his chosen spot.

"I barely had time to switch the alarm on before the bobbin cracked into the blank and I was into a fish."

"It fought really hard, and I was convinced I was into a carp. I was in awe when I saw a huge tench surface before quickly bundling it into the net."

"It was enormous, and it was confirmed by the scales when they read 11lb 3oz, my new PB and a fish I never thought I would ever catch," Aaron said.
