One of the most iconic items of tackle in coarse angling history has just been purchased by an avid collector.

Steve Chambers is the man who picked up Chris Yates’ MKIV Avon, which was used to tame ‘The Bishop’ – Yates’ 51lb 8oz British Record carp.

The split cane rod, the ‘Excalibur’ of vintage tackle, was built by Dick Walker, and adds to Steve’s already impressive collection of Walker-built MKIVs. It includes the rods of Bernard Venables, Dick Kefford, Peter Thomas, and Colonel Maclean.

“When these items are put together, the history becomes even more special, and all in one place,” said Steve, who bought the rod for an undisclosed sum from fellow collector Roger Sargent.

“I have no intention of my collection ever being sold or broken up,” said Steve.

“I lose money on each item, but keeping them together is about respecting the memory of the Carp Catchers Club, and what they started for angling in the 1950s.”
