While carp often dominate the angling media, it’s rare to see one as colourful as this stunning koi carp, aptly nicknamed 'The Carrot', which was caught lately by Shaun Slack. He struck gold during a session at Angel’s Lakes in Bridgnorth, when his foam hookbait, fished on a zig rig, was intercepted by the vibrant carp Shaun described as the 'best-looking fish' he has ever caught.

"I have just joined the winter syndicate on Angel's Lake, and while I have fished the other lakes this summer, I have been desperate to get on this water for ages and was really keen to get the rods out," Shaun told us..

A super looking fish for Shaun

"About a month ago, I fished the lake for the first time. Unfortunately, my enthusiasm took a hit as I blanked during a 72-hour session," he added.

"Undeterred, I returned last Friday, determined to fish hard until Monday and hopefully tempt one of the lake’s elusive residents."

"With the lake proving a little tricky, I decided to fish a zig rig set at 1.5 feet, using yellow foam over a light scattering of maize and pellets."

"After a very slow start to the session, I was sound asleep when, at around 3:30 a.m, I got the take I had been hoping for."

"The first fish from a new lake always gets the adrenaline pumping, and after a few nervous minutes, it surfaced. Under the torchlight, I could see a huge orange koi and my heart was racing!" Shaun recalled.

"It was a fish I had seen before and always dreamed of catching. At 30lb 7oz, it looked absolutely stunning, and it’s without a doubt the best-looking fish I’ve ever caught."
