The huge 53lb ghost carp lives in Spooky Pool

The huge ghostie was caught from the aptly named Spooky Pool near Fraddon by local angler Sam Croft.

“I’d fished the venue once before and blanked, but this time I spoke to the lake owner who gave me some fantastic information about the venue, around which I was able to form my game plan,” the 29-year-old told Angling Times.

Using a Deeper to locate a spot on the far margin, Sam proceeded to regularly bait the spot with Mad Baits boilies without actually casting a rig out.

The move paid off and allowed the fish to build their confidence feeding in the area and he eventually received a take out of the blue in the middle of the day.

“It was boiling hot with no wind and there hadn’t been any signs of fish activity - I definitely wasn’t expecting a take in these conditions!

“As soon as I lifted into the fish she kited into a set of lily pads but thankfully came free fairly quickly. At this point I saw how massive she was and my nerves really kicked in. I finally got her safely in the net and couldn’t believe how heavy she felt as I went to lift her from the water.”

Sam tempted the new Cornish record carp with a wafter hookbait that matched his free offerings presented on a fluorocarbon D-rig.
