OVER the last few seasons Drennan Cup holder Simon Daley has been captivated by eel fishing, and he finally got just reward for his efforts when he slipped his net under this 7lb 4oz monster from a lake in his home county of Hampshire.
The venue had no history of producing eels until recently, when a carp angler caught one by mistake.
After hearing of the catch, Simon decided to give the water a bash, and had fish of 5lb 2oz, 4lb 10oz and
4lb 3oz on his first trip, as well as losing a big one that got tangled in a tree root.
On his next session he connected with another large fish that came close to escaping after the hook became caught in the mesh of Simon’s landing net! Thankfully, all went smoothly after that, and he claimed his prize, which measured 44.5ins long, with a huge girth of just under 10ins. Half a gudgeon fished on a size 8 Talon Tip hook was the winning bait.
