Double Trent surprise!

THIS 47lb catfish and 27lb sturgeon were surprise catches for two anglers fishing the River Trent!

Sheffield’s Tarl Bailey was the first to encounter one of the river’s more mysterious residents, landing the 47lb catfish during a short barbel fishing session near Newark.

“It took a piece of Spam and fought for around 30 minutes, but it seemed like an hour – the fish took me up and down the river several times,” he said. “The net wasn’t big enough, and the fish snapped the handle, so me and my buddy Martin Howarth got in the river and somehow managed to scoop it up. We just looked down at the thing, gobsmacked.”

Next up was Merseyside rod Liam Willis, who had this prehistoric 27lb sturgeon from the stretch at Gunthorpe on two 15mm Spotted Fin boilies, intended for barbel.

“My aim for the session was to beat my barbel PB, but never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d catch a sturgeon from a UK river,” Liam told us. “That’s why I love river fishing – you just don’t know what’ll be next to pick up your bait!”
