Last weekend, saw James Champion start his autumn bream campaign on a large, challenging gravel pit in Hertfordshire. Just hoping to get a feel for the water with it being his first trip, he employed tactics that had served him well on other waters and to his surprise, he landed a huge slab that kicked his campaign off in the best way possible.
“I was very fortunate to catch one on my first night – a huge fish of 15lb 14oz!"
“I fished three rods on different spots, as the swim I had chosen offered lots of water and a variety of features."
“At around 1am, the middle rod, being fished on a shallow gravel plateau, pulled up tight and I lifted into a heavy weight."
“Still half asleep, I carefully coaxed the fish towards the landing net, until a huge bream rose to the surface from the deep margins."
“I was somewhat shocked, as just getting a bite on this water was my goal, such is its difficulty. To land a bream so quickly exceeded all my expectations. I hooked it on two grains of artificial corn.”
