Eight-hour drive brings stunning best grayling

Specimen angler Dan Woolcott is used to putting in the miles to track down big examples of many species, and at the backend of last year made an epic trip from his home in Kent to Scotland, where he caught this stunning 3lb 3oz grayling.

Watching the weather closely, he made sure he would be hitting the river in prime conditions, so his mammoth eight-hour drive would not be wasted.

"Things started off really tough, as expected, but after the first day I'd managed quite a few grayling up to 1lb 15oz," he told us.

"I'd explored most of the stretch by this point and had tried numerous swims, focusing on the deep pools, where I hoped the fish would be lying.

"Up to then, I'd been mainly trotting maggots, but I've found on previous sessions that switching to a worm hookbait can single out the better fish."

The next day Dan's bait switch worked a treat as his loafer float slid away, attached to a very hard-fighting fish.

"The rod hooped over and I played this fish for around five minutes - it gave me one of the most spectacular fights I've ever had on a float rod," he said.

"On the scales it went 3lb 3oz - a new PB and the fish I'd travelled all the way to Scotland to catch.

"Based on my 16ins net, she was 53cm long, which is mind-blowing!

"To top my special catch off, it started to snow, so I got a fantastic picture complete with a winter's background."
