When Paul Topley’s partner, Amber, said she fancied a few days away, he persuaded her to accompany him to Clawford Lakes in Devon.

There, Paul tried the float, jig and spinner before targeting an overhanging bush on the island behind their lodge with a roach livebait, feeding maggots, chopped worms and prawns in a mixture of powdered krill and molehill soil.

Very soon he connected with a powerful fish and, when it surfaced, he instantly knew it was the one he was after. Following a couple of heart-pounding moments, a 5lb 2oz perch lay in the net.
