Imagine a fishing pole that’s 20% stronger, significantly stiffer, and just as lightweight as before. That’s exactly what MAP has achieved with its new ‘G Series’ range, thanks to cutting-edge graphene technology. According to MAP, these poles are 20% stronger and a lot stiffer than previous models without adding weight. But how does it work?
What is Graphene and why is it a game-changer?
Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal structure, making it strong yet incredibly lightweight. Originally isolated in 2004, this Nobel Prize-winning material is now revolutionising industries with it widely used in crash helmet production, and in sports equipment including fishing pole technology. Novak Djokovich’s tennis racket is made using graphene.
Here are some interesting facts about graphene and how they are beneficial to fishing pole performance. Graphene is 200 times stronger than steel relative to weight and surface area (kg/m2), It is incredibly light weight (1m2 weighs just 0.77mg, 1m2 of paper would be 1000 times heavier), and because of its strength it is more rigid than traditional carbon fibres.
When combined with standard carbon fibre layers in pole manufacturing, graphene makes the pole stronger and stiffer, more responsive and resistant to damage.
More tensile strength without extra weight.
Traditional carbon poles are thin walled to keep them lightweight, but this also makes them vulnerable to crushing and impact damage. By reinforcing the molecular structure of carbon fibre, graphene strengthens the pole without the need for extra layers or added weight.
MAP’s claim that the G Series is 20% stronger and with increased stiffness without adding weight is backed up by graphene’s material properties.
In tests, a No.6 section of the new G60 pole withstood 24kg of pressure before fracturing, compared to 20kg for the TKS 3G 901 an impressive 18% increase in strength.
Greater stiffness for precision and control.
Stiffness is key for accurate fishing and feeding at full length. Traditional carbon poles have slight flex and oscillation at its full length. Graphene reduces 'micro-flex' within the carbon structure making the pole more rigid and responsive. This increased responsiveness will enhance reaction time when fishing at its full length, in particularly for hitting those lightning-fast bites when fishing shallow for f1’s.
With the G Series, MAP has redefined pole performance delivering unmatched strength, stiffness, and durability without extra weight. Our tackle tester, Dan Webb has just had one of these out for a live test and he was certainly impressed, you can read what he thought in an upcoming issue of Angling Times Magazine.
