Extra water brings Hampshire Avon giant

This catch report was sent to our news desk recently by big-fish specialist and Drennan Cup contender Alan Stagg...

“The Hampshire Avon looked in great condition, carrying extra water and still rising. I’d landed a 13lb 6oz barbel the previous evening, so I got back down there the next night.

“Wading through knee-deep water in the pouring rain, I got to the swim and flicked my boilie hookbait into a lovely close-in slack, with 20 broken and whole boilies fed around the rig.

“It wasn’t long before I landed a 5lb 8oz chub, and three hours later I had a twitchy bite which I thought would be a chub, but when I struck and the fish headed downstream, I knew it was a good barbel. After a great fight I landed this 16lb 4oz fish – my second-biggest from the venue.”
