Despite many anglers using the float to target grayling, it is not always practical, nor is it always the most effective method—especially when dealing with pressured fish. The seldom-used feeder is an exceptional way to fish for grayling and one that often leads to unmissable bites. This was precisely what happened recently to Neale Woodward, while out fishing for grayling on the Dorset Frome.
Upon arriving at the river, Neale was greeted by terrible conditions. Gale-force winds and an unsettled river rendered his planned trotting tactics useless. Fortunately, he had packed his feeder rod in the car as a backup before leaving home. After deploying a maggot feeder in various swims without success, he considered calling it a day. However, he stumbled upon a promising slack with some cover in a swim where he had caught fish in previous sessions.
Thankfully this decision tuned the session around, as not only did he land this magnificent 3lb 1oz fish, he went on to land another four grayling to 2lb 6oz.
All his fish fell to a simple running feeder setup, with a size 14 hook upon which he used two to three red maggots as a hookbait.
USING ONE OF THE BEST FEEDER RODS WILL HELP YOU CATCH SPECIMEN FISH OF ALL SPECIES.
